acevo launches commission on public health
ACEVO has launched a Commission to report on the third sector's role in improving the nation's public health.
Public health is currently high on the political agenda: the Conservatives recently published a Green Paper on public health which proposed introducing payment by results, ring-fencing public health funding, and making the Department of Health a Department of Public Health. Meanwhile the Government-commissioned Marmot Review was published in February 2010, a major report mapping health inequalities in this country and setting out how they could be tackled. The ACEVO Commission will review these proposals and others and consider how the third sector's potential in this area could be maximised.
The Commission's draft terms of reference are “to explore the third sector’s potential role in public health in this country, and the steps that need to be taken to realise that potential.” You can download a summary of the Commission's priorities and the key questions it is working to address here.
The Commission is chaired by Simon Antrobus, CEO of the drug charity Addaction. Other members of the Commission include CEOs of the Royal Society of Public Health, the National Heart Forum, the British Liver Trust, the Association for Physical Education, Action for Children, Diabetes UK, Alcohol Concern, Action on Smoking and Health, Breakthrough Breast Cancer, the Men's Health Forum, and Grenfell Housing. Senior officials from the Department of Health will act as observers to the Commission.
The Commission will aim to produce an interim report in May or June 2010 and then a final report in autumn 2010. The Commission has met with ACEVO members and others on a number of occasions, and continues to welcome engagement.
