POLICY: INTERNSHIPS

ACEVO (the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations) is the national representative body for chief executives of non-profit organisations (charities, social enterprises, housing associations, including most of the large household charity names in the UK). We represent our 2,000 members on a wide range of issues, and have a powerful reach inside Westminster, Whitehall and the media.

At any one time there are usually around 5 interns at ACEVO to roughly 30 staff. One or two of those interns are policy interns, and they are central to the policy team. Policy interns are given a wide variety of responsibilities relating to research, lobbying, campaigning and press work, including drafting correspondence, articles and press releases, preparing policy briefings, and managing their own policy projects.

The length of internships is flexible, but they usually last three months. The position is unpaid but we do provide money for travel and lunch expenses. Policy interns are based at our London offices in Holborn, between Oxford Street, Covent Garden and the City.

An integral part of the team and entrusted with responsibility early on, our interns are enthusiastic, reliable, and enjoy working in a team. They have an interest in public policy, have strong written and communication skills, are highly computer literate, and have strong organisational skills and good research background.

Previous interns' experiences

Eleanor Carter"From the earliest moments of my internship with ACEVO I was made to feel appreciated as a member of the team... My internship provided a great vantage point for grasping the work of the third sector, in a friendly and hard working environment."

Eleanor joined ACEVO's policy team as an intern in January 2009 shortly after graduating from Cambridge University. After the internship she went on to become a policy officer at the environmental charity BTCV. Read more about her experience here

Richard Doughty"I have been able to use my experiences at ACEVO in all my activities since. I would reccomend it to anyone!"

Richard joined ACEVO's policy team as an intern in October 2008 shortly after a completing his time as president of Essex University's Student Union. After his internship at ACEVO he went on to be Strategy and Policy Officer for Advocacy Alliance and Information and Communications Officer for the Essex, Southend & Thurrock Infrastructure Consortium (ESTIC). Read more about his experience here.
