ACEVO partnership programme
ACEVO’s Partnership Programme is designed to provide a range of resources to support third sector leaders that are thinking about partnership working, collaborations or mergers.
ACEVO’s support will offer guidance through every stage of the process; from exploring options with your Chair and Board to thinking about the model which will work best for your organisation and facilitating or advising on implementation. This bespoke service allows you to access support through practical toolkits and publications, one to one consultancy or through peer learning and master classes.
Resources available through the Partnership Programme are outlined below. If you would like to discuss your situation in more detail, know more about the support options available or suggest a service please contact Erin McFeely.
A Guide to Mergers for Third Sector CEOs
ACEVO’s Guide to Mergers offers practical tools and advice for third sector CEOs considering merger or collaboration. Presented as a workbook, the Guide looks at the strategic issues for third sector organisations embarking upon a mergers journey, from self-assessment and finding the right model to negotiation and funding. A Guide to Mergers for Third Sector CEOs explores a number of case studies from CEOs who have led their organisation through this major change process, including perspectives from CEOs of national and local charities.
This publication by David LaPiana of LaPiana Consulting, based in the US has been adapted for an English audience. David LaPiana is a leading thinker in non-profit mergers and a regular collaborator with ACEVO. You can see pages from the publication and purchase it here.
ACEVO’s Mergers Panel
ACEVO understands the strength and value of peer learning for our members. ACEVO’s Mergers Panel brings together third sector CEOs with experience in leading an organisation through the merger process, to mentor and support their peers embarking on this journey.
This will be an invaluable resource for ACEVO members, who wish to benefit from a voice of experience and a listening ear. Please contact Erin McFeely if you would like to get involved. We will strive to match you with a CEO based on your particular context and situation.
Matching Service
We can help you to ‘pre-think’ your range of options before taking action. If and when you decide to move forward with a partnership, we will work with our corporate partners to provide you with a matching service that will help you to find the ideal organisation to fit with yours.
Masterclasses
ACEVO are working with IVAR (Institute for Voluntary Action Research) to bring you cutting edge masterclasses which offer the space and information to asses the right option for your organisation. IVAR are attending our CEO Forum meetings in the North East, North West and Yorkshire and Humber, to present their latest research on merger and collaboration.

Consortia Development
There are many options for collaborative working in addition to undertaking a full merger. These include partnering with private and third sector prime contractors and developing joint venture companies to bid for and win public service contracts. ACEVO has successfully supported capacity building initiatives for prime contractors and built third sector consortia around the UK that have already won investment from their key commissioners. Support is available in the form of:
- Strategic planning workshops
- Capacity Building
- Bespoke business development packages
- Seminars and training programmes
