Nominees
- Allison Agius, Catalyst Stockton on Tees
Nominated by: Karen Grundy, eVOLution (Darlington CVS) Seconded by: Susan Bickerton, NORCARE
Candidate Statement: In three years Allison Agius has taken Catalyst Stockton from an idea to an innovative infrastructure vehicle which encapsulates a new method of delivering support through brokerage and commissioning, using experts in the field on an ad hoc basis rather than in house delivery. This keeps the core of the organisation small, enables it to focus on the strategic needs of the sector and ensures it maintains an ability to stay nimble and change delivery to fit changing needs. Allison was cheered by the launch of ACEVO North but remains frustrated by the general lack of representation of the North nationally. She is keen to do something about it, particularly increasing the northern membership numbers, which only run at around 40 at the moment. Passionate, committed and enthusiastic about the future (despite all the evidence to the contrary) suggests either a refreshing approach or someone who’s just plain bonkers!
- Virginia Beardshaw, I CAN
Nominated by: Nick Young, British Red Cross Seconded by: Tom Flood - BTCV
Candidate Statement: Virginia Beardshaw is CEO of I CAN, the children’s communication charity. She is seeking re-election as an ACEVO Trustee. At ACEVO, Virginia served on the ACEVO Commission on Personalisation (2010), and on the ACEVO Early Years Task Force (2011). She is a board member of ACEVO’s trading arm, ACEVO solutions. Virginia brings experience of running a medium-sized national charity to ACEVO. As a former Chair of kith and kids and a Trustee of StartHere she understands the pressures on small community groups and start-ups too. Her career spans the VCS and public sector, and she has worked in the UK and internationally. She was the first European Co-ordinator of Health Action International. Contributing to the British Red Cross’ response to the Asian Tsunami was a career high. Campaigning, influencing policy and service improvement are Virginia’s passions. She has a long standing interest in third sector provision of public services.
- Aidan Grills, Leeds University Union
Nominated by: Matt Hyde, National Union of Students Seconded by: Steve Woodford, Foundation
Candidate Statement: I would bring to the ACEVO Board a diverse understanding of the voluntary sector spanning community organising to larger charities. I would seek to contribute to and support the leadership of ACEVO as it must find new ways to respond and represent members in a time of great change. Leadership and governance challenges emerge when resources are scarce, but the bigger challenge is to enable the values and core purpose for the organisations we represent. I am passionate about the role the voluntary sector can play to change lives. My professional role as CEO of Leeds University Union allows me to develop the potential in young people who become tomorrow’s leaders. My own voluntary experience includes membership of the Salvation Army and I serve as a Board Member for the Leeds Christian Community Trust and Foundation – working on social inclusion issues across the North.
- Jonathan Higgs, Raven Housing Trust
Nominated by: Diana Kingdon, Greenoak Housing Association Seconded by: David Orr, National Housing Federation
Candidate Statement: Voluntary organisations are special: it’s our job to make sure they stay that way in the face of cuts, recession, private sector contract competition, and pressure from within to transform. Like you, I wrestle daily with embracing the opportunities brought by change and maintaining focus on our purpose. Throughout my first year of membership, I have benefitted from support through ACEVO and can see its potential for galvanising the voice of the sector in these energising times. I have been in the housing association sector for 20 years, 9 of them as a CEO, and 5 years as a Board Member. I currently run Raven Housing Trust in Surrey, spending £30m delivering housing services to 15,000 people in housing need. I can offer expertise in governance, organisational development, property development and the regeneration of communities through partnership. I hope I also bring passion and enthusiasm for our sector’s work.
- Kulbinder Kang, People First Housing Association
Nominated by: Anna Lunt, Creative Support Seconded by:Shirley Devine, Manchester Carers Centre
Candidate Statement: I am passionate about the voluntary sector and the invaluable work we do and I have worked in the sector for 20 years in a range of organisations, creating, building and leading such organisations. During my employment in the sector I have served on a number of boards including the National Housing Federation (for over 10 years) and served as Chair, for example. With Shelter’s Roof Magazine’s Editorial Board (for in excess of 5 years). I therefore have a wealth of experience, skills and knowledge to bring as a board member and I am keen to make an active contribution to the work of ACEVO in the challenging times ahead. As a long standing member of ACEVO I recognise the important role ACEVO has in supporting members, particularly in the current political and economic environment and in ensuring we have a voice to effectively lobby government.
- Cath Lee, Small Charities Coalition/Charity Trustee Network
Nominated by: Henny Braund, Anthony Nolan Trust Seconded by: Caroline Diehl, The Media Trust
Candidate Statement: I have broad skills and experience gained from both large and small charities. I worked in various service and programme management roles over 13 years at Shelter and Crisis and marketing roles for 5 years at RNIB prior to that. Most recently as CEO at Small Charities Coalition I have gained insight into the unique role CEO’s play in their organisation and the particular challenges that CEO’s of small charities face. I am interested in how the relationship between CEO and Trustees, if it works well, can be transformative for an organisation. However, at SCC we see first hand the damage that can be caused when that relationship is not right or when the governance in an organisation works against the CEO. I personally value the support I receive from ACEVO and think I would bring a fresh perspective to the Board. I would welcome the opportunity to contribute to its future.
- Nick Maher, Industry and Parliament Trust
Nominated by: Wes Streeting Helena Kennedy Foundation Seconded by: Sarah Hamilton-Fairley - StartHere
Candidate Statetment: I became the CEO of IPT in July 2011 having previously served in the Ministry of Defence on a team constructing a 'New Employment Model' for the Armed Forces. In an extensive career with the Army I have held a variety of specialist and management appointments largely within the Educational and Training Services Branch and have served in a variety of operational and non-operational roles in Germany, Hong Kong, Korea, Bosnia, Kosovo , the Falkland Islands and Iraq. I bring a host of learning and development/Whitehall expertise from my previous existence in the Army. I am very keen to contribute and make my mark within ACEVO.
- Paul Martin OBE, Lesbian & Gay Foundation
Nominated by:Louise Barry, Merseyside Disability Federation Seconded by: Maggie Walker – Manchester Care & Repair Ltd
Candidate Statement: I have been actively involved in the voluntary sector for 25 years and I have never known such uncertain times where one day I am planning for potential growth and the next having to plan for potential further reductions. As CEO of a medium-sized charity I am standing for the ACEVO Board as I think that as a group, medium-sized charities are experiencing a ‘perfect storm’ of challenges at the moment. I believe that I can bring to the table a wealth of expertise and experience of running a charity which is both specialist in nature in terms of target audience and specific in nature in terms of geographical footprint. I am a firm believer in the VCS coming together to work in partnership to resolve the difficulties we currently face. By being on the Board I would hope to play a part in supporting members to help shape our future.
- Allison Ogden-Newton, Social Enterprise London
Nominated by: Tom Flood , BTCV Seconded by: Virginia Beardshaw – I CAN
Candidate Statement: With 19 years experience as a CEO I have built a dynamic organisation at the forefront of social enterprise offering strategic and inclusive innovation in social development. As a CEO I have always valued the ceaseless work ACEVO does to support those at the front of civil society and would welcome the opportunity to contribute to that important work through the ACEVO Board. I would like to thank you for your support.
