The code is a mile-stone towards professionalising the third sector. Adoption of the code by acevo members means that thrid sector CEOs are committed to the highest level of leadership with the sector and are setting the standards of expected behaviours.

Cedric Frederick, Chair of the Professional Standards Committee comments:

“The professional standards committee have identified three elements which we feel represent a high degree of personal and professional conduct for third sector leaders:

• a commitment to continuing professional development;
• adherence to the standards of expected behaviour in the sector through agreement of a code of conduct; and
• means of upholding the code to ensure the sector is and is seen to be maintaining the highest standards of leadership.

Adopting the code is the first step towards formally acknowledging the importance of third sector leadership”

The nature of the third sector is changing. As the third sector becomes of increased political importance it is crucial for its leaders to demonstrate that they are able to lead effectively. The code represents a guarantee for great leadership and inspires trust and confidence in the ability of the CEO. Acevo is proud to be leading the way towards this new standard for the sector.

Professional Standards Committee

At the start of 2007, acevo asked its members, via its Members’ survey if they supported the introduction of a Code of Conduct. 77% agreed they did.

Following this, a Professional Standards Committee of acevo Full members was established and a draft Code was sent out to members for consultation.

The professional standards committee will be responsible for establishing and reviewing regulations and procedures governing the code.
