Treasurer

Overview of the role

ACEVO is looking for a treasurer to monitor our financial administration and report back to fellow trustees on the organisation’s state of financial health.

If you share our vision of seeing civil society leaders making the biggest possible difference and want to be part of a trustee board providing strategy, scrutiny and support for the CEO and executive team delivering our purpose, we’d love to hear from you.

As treasurer, you’ll work with our head of finance and operations to oversee the presentation of budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the board of trustees. You’ll chair our finance and audit committee and be a member of the remuneration committee. You’ll keep an eye on our reserves, make sure we’re sticking to our financial systems and procedures, help steer us through financial risk management and lead board-level liaison with our external auditors. It adds up to around 4-6 hours a month in total.

You’ll already have knowledge of financial planning and auditing, an accountancy qualification/ expertise and knowledge of charity finance. Previous experience of being a trustee would also be useful but not essential – the successful candidate will have access to a comprehensive induction process.

As an ACEVO trustee, we’d expect you to have:

  • a commitment to ACEVO’s vision, mission and values
  • willingness to devote the time and effort needed to fulfil the role
  • a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, and to contributing to a positive working culture
  • integrity and a willingness to speak your mind
  • strategic vision
  • good, independent judgement
  • an ability to think creatively
  • an understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
  • an ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to make decisions for the good of ACEVO.

Our values are to be member-driven, connected, ambitious and honest so the more you can demonstrate those attributes the better. In line with our diversity goals, ACEVO’s board would particularly welcome applications from candidates with the appropriate skills who are also from Black or Asian communities.

The treasurer role is a co-opted position with a term of three years, with the opportunity to extend for a second term of three years.

The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday 24 July 2020. Applications will be assessed by a nominations committee of existing trustees who will draw up a shortlist for interview. The nominations committee comprises Rosie Ferguson (chair), Jill Halford (current treasurer), Jehangir Malik and David Smith. Shortlisted candidates will be notified during the week of 27 July, with interviews taking place in the week of 8 September, most likely online. You’ll probably also be asked to have an informal chat with our CEO, Vicky Browning and head of finance and operations, Catherine Macrae.

The successful candidate will be informed on 18 September with an invitation to attend our 1 October board meeting as treasurer-elect. Your formal period of office will commence at the board meeting and strategy away day on 3 December.

If you would like to apply, please download the treasurer job description and complete the application form, which includes your details plus 350 words outlining why you wish to be the ACEVO treasurer, what you will bring to the ACEVO board and how you meet the preferred skills and characteristics as identified by the current trustees. Completed application forms, along with a signed fit and proper persons declaration and ACEVO’s equality and diversity form should be emailed to katie.macdonald@acevo.org.uk by the closing deadline. If you wish to discuss the role with the current treasurer Jill Halford, or chair Rosie Ferguson, please let Katie know and she will arrange a convenient time.

We look forward to hearing from you.
