Commenting on Labour’s commitment to repeal the Lobbying Act, ACEVO Director of Public Policy Asheem Singh said,
“We wholeheartedly welcome the Labour Party’s commitment to repeal the Lobbying Act. The Lobbying Act by any definition is bad law and seriously risks chilling legitimate democratic debate before a general election.
“Earlier this year, ACEVO Chief Executive Sir Stephen Bubb wrote to Ed Miliband urging his party to commit to repeal. We were encouraged then by his Party’s response and their undertaking to us to ‘reverse the damage done.’ We are pleased to see that these words have been followed by action.
“ACEVO’s campaign against the Lobbying Act will continue as long as this piece of legislation is in place. This latest development is the latest in a long and arduous campaign, which does not end here. We now urge other political parties to acknowledge the mistake this Act represents and commit to repeal this bad law too.”
