Realising the Potential of Governance

This report was the product of the ACEVO Governance Commission, chaired by Derek Twine, then CEO of the Scout Association. Looking at a variety of factors across the governance of charities, the report examines what charities can do to strengthen their organisations. It also looks at how other bodies can act in a way which would benefit the strength of the charity sector.

It contained recommendations for charities, for the Charity Commission, for government, and for funders and commissioners. These covered a wide range of topics, and included:

  • That charities should establish formal appraisal proceudres for CEOs, trustees and Chairs
  • That funders take the strength of an organisations governance into account
  • That trustees should be entitled to time off work to fulfil their duties in this role
  • That charities be obliged to report on governance as part of the Annual Report
