The Way Ahead

The Way Ahead was an examination of the relationship between the third sector and trade unions. Written by former political secretary to Number 10, Nita Clarke, this outlined this relationship as a potential ‘Achilles heel’ for the third sector. This was in part due to the danger of an ‘amateur approach’ creeping in to the management of charities.

Building on a wide area of mutual interest or shared concern, this report made extensive recommendations for the improvement of third sector-trade union relations. These included:

  • The drawing up of a union/third sector protocol, as already exists between unions and private companies
  • That unions which recruit within the sector find ways of working together to find a common approach for engaging sector leaders
  • That unions and the third sector should consider those areas where working together in approaching government may be beneficial
