ACEVO recommends: December 2023

“ACEVO recommends” initially began as a weekly thread on Twitter, curating noteworthy resources, content, and events pertinent to leaders within the sector. These insightful recommendations have transitioned to a monthly format, now accessible through the ACEVO blog.

Charity Fraud Report 2023

BDO has published the findings of its 2023 survey in charity fraud. As is demonstrated by the survey results, the impact of fraud is not just financial – fraud impacts all parts of an organisation – from staff turnover to negative press and impact on reputation. Find out how UK charities view fraud risk, the losses that can be sustained, and most importantly, what measures charities can put in place to combat fraud risk during times of great pressure and uncertainty. Read the report.

Charity Investment Governance Principles project

CFG has launched a new project which will develop principles for trustees and charity leaders. The Charity Investment Governance Principles project will explore best practice in decision-making around charity investments, and will draw on the experiences of charities across England and Wales. The principles will reflect the outcomes of the high-profile Butler-Sloss case of 2022 and will complement the Charity Commission’s recently updated CC14 guidance and the Charity Governance Code. The principles are expected to be published in summer 2024. Find out more.

The Intersectional Storyteller’s Toolkit

Media Trust is launching a free five-part guide to intersectional storytelling, designed to help charities and voluntary organisations show how people from underrepresented identities can face multiple types of discrimination or disadvantage. The Intersectional Storyteller’s Toolkit will be issued in five daily emails, packed with useful tips from experts in equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), as well as UK journalists who will share what they look for in pitches and case studies from the charity sector. Contributors include staff from the BBC, Black Thrive, Climate Outreach, the Guardian, Inclusion London, the Metro, and Stonewall. Blending accessible video resources and PDFs, the toolkit will break down technical terms, share real life examples, and show the importance of an intersectional approach to storytelling, sharing experiences from people who face several barriers to equality

Trustee attitudes survey

The Sheila McKechnie Foundation has collaborated with Governance and Leadership magazine to survey 165 charity trustees on their attitudes to and understanding of speaking out, campaigning, charity regulation, and more. The results reveal a strong appetite to speak up, but a lack confidence in navigating the current environment.  See the full survey results.

Cryptocurrencies and charitable donations: what do charities need to know?

Muckle LLP is launching a new podcast dedicated to exploring the most talked about topics within the charity sector. The first episode features Charlotte Campbell, director of fundraising and operations at the Children’s Heart Unit Fund (Chuf), one of the first UK charities to accept cryptocurrency donations. Charlotte talks about the charity’s involvement with cryptocurrency, detailing the process of accepting crypto donations and the accompanying risks.

Women and the charity sector report

Across the charity sector, there are brilliant examples of women building solutions to the knotty problems their communities face. There are outstanding female leaders running organisations from food banks to cancer research charities. To the female leaders interviewed for this report, the charity sector has enabled them to achieve their ambitions, forge friendships, and provided the means to care for their families. However, the charity sector is far from a panacea for women. There is a profound – and often under-discussed – gender imbalance in the sector. While women make up 68% of the charity sector’s employees, they only make up between 56% and 63% of the sector’s CEOs.  Read the full Pro Bono Economics report.
