ACEVO congratulates Andy Burnham on his appointment as Prime Minister and wishes him well as he begins this important role.
The challenges facing the country are significant, and charities and civil society organisations will be essential to building stronger communities, improving public services and tackling inequality.
We welcome the Prime Minister’s commitment to bringing decision-making closer to people and ensuring communities have a greater voice in shaping their futures. Devolution works best when it is rooted in the knowledge, experience and participation of those it serves. For this ambition to succeed, government must recognise civil society as a strategic partner, drawing on its reach, expertise and insight to develop effective solutions.
We also welcome the focus on easing the pressures facing households. The cost-of-living crisis has placed significant strain on individuals and families, and charities have been at the forefront of providing support, advice and practical help. Across the country, charities and social enterprises are helping people navigate financial hardship, strengthening social connections, driving innovation and working alongside public services to meet local needs.
A strong civil society helps build trust, resilience and a sense of belonging. Charities are deeply rooted in the communities they serve and are often best placed to understand local challenges and opportunities. Their experience and relationships can help ensure that policy is shaped by the realities people face and that support reaches those who need it most.
As the country looks to the future, charities and civil society organisations will continue to play a critical role in helping communities thrive.
