Pay and Equalities Survey 2024

ACEVO’s annual Pay and Equalities Survey is the most comprehensive breakdown of the sector’s CEO remuneration packages available. The report examines chief executive salaries, benefits and job satisfaction in detail. It also explores the level of equality and diversity in our sector’s leadership, and satisfaction levels in the make-up and performance of boards.

ACEVO with its partners has been publishing a pay and equalities survey for over 15 years. In that time the format of the survey has evolved, and the world in which our sector’s leaders operate has changed enormously.

The 2024 Pay and Equalities Survey gathered responses from 1365 charity CEOs, an increased response rate from last year. The proportion from England rose to 76% – similar to the 2022 sample – making the Scotland and Northern Ireland samples too low for individual reporting. However, the sample remains a reliable snapshot of CEO pay and processes, working conditions, diversity and levels of satisfaction across UK charities and leadership, plus a helpful benchmark of CEO salaries.

This report is entirely dependent on the contributions of members of ACEVO, ACOSVO and CO3, and bank customers of the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), who spared time and thought to complete the survey. We are extremely grateful to everyone who took part, and to Action Planning for supporting this report.

The survey was designed by ACEVO and CAF, then set up and run as an online survey by CAF.
