Being a charity CEO – what’s it worth?

Director of people at Eastside People, heads up its workforce planning and recruitment services. Bernice has a master’s degree in occupational psychology and specialises in the human side of organisations. She has extensive experience in leadership matters and oversees the development of the recruitment service for Eastside People, which includes finding permanent, interim and Board candidates. Bernice believes in inclusive recruitment and has a genuine passion for helping organisations to find exceptional candidates from underrepresented backgrounds. Bernice is a founding trustee at Board Racial Diversity UK, an organisation that seeks to address the under-representation of people from minoritised ethnic groups on trustee boards.

Gail has more than 25 years of experience in the charity and not-for-profit sectors. Since 2025, she has been CEO of Imperial Health Charity, which supports five major NHS hospitals in London by funding grants, managing hospital arts, and running volunteer services. Prior to this she was CEO of King’s College Hospital Charity, the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust and the Carers Trust. She also holds non-executive and trustee roles, as a Non-Executive Director of the Women’s Football Board of the Football Association, a Trustee of the Premier League Charitable Fund, and Co-Chair of NHS Charities Together’s London region.

Jane joined ACEVO in May 2022. She previously headed up Creative and Cultural Skills, working to create fair and inclusive opportunities within the creative and cultural sectors. Before that, she spent four years as CEO of NAVCA, where she led the transformation of the national membership body for local voluntary sector infrastructure organisations in England.  She has leadership and communications experience in both the voluntary and public sectors and a genuine commitment to delivering a valuable and impactful experience for members.

Roberta joined ACEVO in October 2022 and has over 20 years of experience in public policy and communications roles gained in the public and social sector, including central, regional and local government, charities and charity infrastructure.  

Roberta is a trustee of a national carers charity, chaired a local branch of a national autism charity for several years and has also been a school governor.  She combines a caring role with work and is a champion of carers rights
