ACEVO CEO Jane Ide says:
“Keir Starmer’s resignation marks a significant moment for our country. Throughout his time in public life, he has demonstrated a deep commitment to public service, integrity and the values that underpin our democracy. I am particularly grateful for his recognition of the vital role that civil society plays in strengthening communities and improving lives, reflected in his personal and sustained commitment to the Civil Society Covenant and the partnership it represents between government and civil society.
At moments of change such as this, the importance of leadership cannot be overstated. Effective leadership is not only about governing well; it is about bringing people together, building trust and articulating a shared sense of purpose. As the country looks ahead, I hope for leadership that sets out a compelling vision for the future of our united nation and inspire confidence in the path forward.
At a time when division, distrust and increasingly polarised views are challenging social cohesion, civil society plays critical role to play in helping bridge differences, serve and strengthen communities. Charities, voluntary organisations and social enterprises are at the forefront of tackling the root causes of division and dealing with the consequences of that division, creating opportunities for people to come together around shared goals and common values.
Whoever succeeds Keir Starmer as Prime Minister will face significant challenges, but also a unique opportunity to lead the country towards a more cohesive and inclusive future. I hope our next Prime Minister continues to recognise the immense value of civil society and directs their government at every level to work alongside its leaders, in partnership, to help realise a shared vision for the country, strengthen social cohesion and harness the power of communities to combat the forces of division that threaten to pull us apart.”
